monday luxuries

Heyo!

I was actually so busy at work today that it went really fast, and I forgot to get all luxurious up in herrre! I'll make it fast, because I'm busy eating the most simple, delicious dinner (hey, that's a luxury too! another time...) and watching antiques roadshow. PRIORITIES, guys.

Here 'tis: MALIN+GOETZ anything, really, but my current obsession is this rum hand wash. It's got a sort of tropical/woodsy/masculine scent - unisex enough that I don't really feel like I'm wearing Old Spice or anything, but masculine enough to make me wish I was sitting next to a fella who smelled like this instead of just reminding myself that I washed my hands after I went to the ladies'.

It's srsly fab, and even though it's a bunch of money for soap, it is soooo awesome. And if you find a fella who wants to smell like this all the time, send him my way.

choosing

"...it turns out that are few things more chaotic than the beat of a human heart. Its beating up, slowing down. Pretty face, flirty stares. It's always changing on what's happening to ourselves out there. It's an erratic son of a bitch. But underneath all of that bump-da-bump mess, there is in fact a pattern, the truth, and it's love. Most important thing about love is that we choose to give it, and we choose to receive it. Making it the least random act in the entire universe. It transcends blood, it transcends betrayal and all the dirt and makes us human."

monday luxuries

Just getting this one in under the wire!

It's a holiday and I've had a beautiful long relaxing weekend full of crafting and lovely friends. Seems to be a theme...

I was trying to think of what nice little thing to tell you about today; I've been trying to focus on small, genuinely affordable things. I hate in fashion magazines when they classify anything as a "steal!" if it's under $100. Sorry, but a $98 t-shirt just isn't going to happen for me, no matter how rich I get. I'm on an extremely limited budget this year (again) but I still like to treat myself once in a while! I was sitting at the computer wondering what to do, downloading photos from my phone and eating my favorite ice cream... and voy-ola it came to me in a flash!

This is my absolute favorite frozen treat. It's so tangy and awesome, and super cheap, and always there, and 100 calories per half cup. Personally I like to just eat a few spoonfuls right out of the carton - yet another reason I love living alone - but it's great with fruit or granola too. And no, I'm not getting any TJ's kickbacks (though hey, I wouldn't complain) - I just really, really love this stuff.

Hope you have a great week!

reflecting

Hi guys!

Yesterday I said no to something I firmly believed I should not do; today I got an email from my friend about the word yes. I was thinking about the two words, and how we use them, and how culturally we often say yes when we want to say no, and say no when we want to say yes. So I wrote it down this way:

I want to always say yes with love and joy and commitment - wholeheartedly. I want to say no with conviction and assuredness and no regret or anger.

For a couple of years I have been working on committing to things only when it is prudent and fits in with my other obligations to others as well as to myself. I am of a disposition where I want to be involved in everything and want to make everyone else happy, though the result most often seems to be that I just don't sleep. Though I still slip from time to time, I feel that it is much more fair to everyone to not overextend myself, and to leave time and energy (and money) for things that will really bring joy and satisfaction to my life.

Anyway, I just wanted to write it down. More satisfaction, less grudging obligation.

monday luxuries

I guess these Monday posts seem to recap the weekend! Apparently that's when I get my luxury on.

This past weekend I went to the San Juans with my BFF and our moms. It was super stormy on Saturday afternoon (good thing Monica and I got in a power walk before it started raining!) and we stayed inside, eating soup, making bread, knitting, quilting, painting, reading, and generally being hecka cozy.

I generally prefer red wine to white but this is definitely one of my favorite whites, and Monica picked up a bottle for us to drink at the cabin. I was first introduced to it when my mom and I consulted a wine steward for picks for a birthday party for my dad several years ago, and it's definitely been my go-to ever since. At around $18/bottle it's a little pricey for my cheapskate self, but totally worth it.

I hope you have a fantastic Valentine's day, whatever you do!

Hi, I like you.

a love letter to every person i've ever liked, platonically or otherwise:

Hello. I like you.

I like to hang out with you, and I like to talk to you. I like it when we share inside jokes and you humor my quirks. But do you know what I like best about you? I like that thing you do. That thing that nobody else does the way you do it. The thing you make that is pretty, or delicious, or sounds beautiful. The thing you know and can tell me about in excruciating detail to the point where I'm simultaneously bored and fascinated. I like that you can quote the entire movie. I like that your worst pie crust is flakier and more delicious than my best. I like that your soup is always delicious. I like that you're a calm, patient, fun, loving parent. I like that you can do complicated math in your head. I like that you are current on politics, music, movies, community affairs. I like that you know exactly how high a standard door handle should be (AFF). I like that you can run a marathon, climb a mountain, get up at 6 am to do toe side flips on perfect glass.

I like that all the things you're amazing at are things I don't particularly excel at - or, frankly, am terrible at doing. My heart explodes with joy and wonder at the fact that there are so many wonderful things that everybody does every day, and I'm doing this one little thing over here, and you're helping fill in all the things I can't do. And you, and you. And you. You make me happy to be part of all this beauty and talent and grace in the world. You help inspire me to be a better me because I want to be as cool as I think you are, and I want to be as cool as you think I am.

Thanks for following your heart, and thanks for sharing your thing with the rest of us.

monday luxuries

I had an amazing weekend. Friday night I went to dinner at the BFF's house; we drank an entire bottle of wine before her fiance and our friend Joel got there at 8, and had two more with dinner. The boys drank beer. I stayed over, needless to say.

Saturday morning I got up ridiculously early and drove to Portland with four other girls. We went shopping and Krista tried on wedding dresses and we went for drinks and drinks and drinks and stayed at the Ace Hotel. Then yesterday we went to a wedding fashion show and shopped a little more and went home. A lovely little day and a half!

I'd tell you about all the places I went but I checked in at all of them on yelp and spammed the facebook. Everywhere was great though. :)

Ripple Afghan stats

Ok, I forgot to keep track of this for a few sessions, but I know I worked on it during a Biggest Loser evening, say 1.5 hours, about another 1.5 hours watching TV at home, (3) 25-minute bus rides, and half an hour today on my lunch break. I am happy to find that I can do all but about 4" of a single row during one bus ride from my home to my office (or vice versa).

Running stats: total time: 8 hours; current width: 8″. 6 colors (12 rows) completed.

the look today

Hey y'all! Just a quick update on the look. I lost 20 lbs since September and now fit back into my skinny jeans, so I am rocking them today with these boots that I can't stop wearing, and a fun nautical hoodie tee. Hope you're all having a kick-ass Thursday!

monday luxuries

Hey folks! I was *thisclose* to blogging on Saturday, but instead I sat on the couch for a good portion of the day, and then frosted a ginormous cake and went to a party! Maybe next week.

For today, I give you this luxury: naps. I shall have Kitty demonstrate.

ahhhhhh!

Yesterday was a pretty great day- I got up early, worked on my Pecha Kucha presentation for this Thursday, had some French toast (made from my own challah), and then took a nap on the couch while listening to the radio. I woke up from a dream just as a song was being introduced - turned out to be written by my friend Ryan Shea Smith, who is an extremely talented musician. Awesome! Then while I was still cozily ensconced on the couch, Monica called to see if I wanted to meet her for a little shopping. Why, yes, that will be lovely, thank you!

After shopping I went home to put on workout clothes, and then went over to Monica's where we did the Jillian Michaels 6 week six pack (ah. maze. ing) and then had a delicious dinner and then a power walk around Madison Park. A perfectly lovely lazy Sunday.
